Cycling Plus

Thicker than a gel but less solid than an energy bar, Clif's Shot Bloks combine electrolytes and simple and complex carbohydrates in bars of half-a-dozen chewable bloks. Four different flavours are available, the orange coming with caffeine, and all are fat-free and suitable for veggies and vegans.

Men's Running

Clif Shot Bloks Mountain Berry - Looking and tasting like the blocks of jelly your mother used to make trifle with, I was all for the sweet, gelatine energy bloks even if they did make me look like a horse chewing molasses. I dropped a few on my trek around London, but with little effect and they made me awfully thirsty.

Do they work? Yes. I tested the Shot Bloks on a long training ride. It was cold, wet and wind-against. A real energy-sapping day. The sort you hate, but the sort you know will be worth it when you’re storming up a major climb on a sunny day in a few months time. After about two hours of riding, I was feeling tired. I bit off three Shot Bloks - quick chew and easy swallow - and within a few minutes I felt better. There was definitely a spring in my step as I went up the next hill out of the saddle in the big ring.

Overall, Shot Bloks are not cheap, but I’d recommend giving them a try, especially if you find gels too sickly and bars too much to handle

Singletrack

Like the whole “Five A Day” thing, I’m aware that I should eat certain things more frequently than I do. Yet even after all these years of riding bikes I still don’t eat “energy foods” on rides even though I know they’d do me the power of good and improve and extend my rides. And I know I’m not alone in this regard either, pretty much everyone in my regular riding posse are similarly nutritionally slack.

That was, until these Shot Block arrived from Clif. We eat them all the time. The key things about the Blocks is that they’re not messy to use (like gels), you don’t have to eat a whole pack one one ride (they keep okay in your pack) and they’re actually pleasant to eat. They don’t feel like a chore to consume. But they still give out a noticeable increase in energy. Quicker than an energy bar but not as rushy and stomach-hating as a gel. They’re like a longer-lasting lower-amplitude gel.
