GU Chomps Energy Chews

Energy gels are great but sometimes you just want a bit of variety or something you can get your teeth in to. Gu Chomps Energy Chews provide all the benefits of a Gu energy gel but in a chewable form, like a Gu gel they deliver a mix of simple and complex carbs, branched chain amino acids, anti oxidants, electrolytes and caffeine in some flavours.

Being in semi solid form rather than a gel they take slightly longer to digest, around 10-15 minutes compared to the more instant hit of a gel, but each serving will provide enough energy for 45 minutes to 1 hour of exercise.

Recommended Usage

Each serving of GU Chomps contains 4 pieces (90 calories) and will provide enough fuel for approximately 45-60 minutes of activity. One packet of Chomps contains 2 servings, which will keep you fueled for 1 ½ to 2 hours. For best results ensure proper hydration and take with 500-750ml of fluid per hour of exercise.

Flavours

GU Chomps are available in Orange or Strawberry flavour. The strawberry flavoured Chomps contain 20mg caffeine per serving whilst the orange Chomps are caffeine free.

Alternative Pack Sizes

As well as multi packs GU Chomps are also available to purchase in single packets -

Press Review

Cycling Weekly

The first energy chews to contain branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) taking sports sweets to the next level, Gu provides a tasty small bag of sweets with added antioxidants too. BCAAs have been shown to reduce muscle fatigue and muscle damage while improving mental focus and are not normal sweet ingredients. With electrolytes, a mix of carbohydrates and four pieces providing 23g of carbohydrate, these provide another excellent fuelling top-up on your ride.

220 Triathlon

GU gels are some of the tastiest out there, so we were quite enthusiastic about experiencing their rather late contrribution to the recent trend in energy sweets. Well, we weren't disappointed... Packed with carbohydrates, amino acids, electrolytes and vitamins, these easily chewable chunks of power come in four palatable flavours, with caffeine options for that extra kick. Each packet claims to provide one-and-a-half to two hours of energy based on two servings, but this'll depend on the intensity of the effort and your individual physiology. To be honest, once you pop it's hard to stop and luckiliy the pack is easy to open on the fly, as we found it difficult not to guzzle the whole lot in one hit. With the unique addition of amino acids (to provide accessible protein for speedy muscle repair) compared to other brands, it was hard to resist downing another pack to assist recovery after training too.

Velo News

Like Clif's similarly textured Shot Bloks, Gu Chomps are essentially nutritionally engineered gummi bears; however, they're also an excellent balance of sweet, sour and salty for mid-exercise nourishment. They include sodium and potassium for electrolyte replacement, and a mix of complex and simple carbs for energy both now and later. The flavours are good, but follow a similar fruit-flavoured gummi-bear theme. We were keenly aware that we weren't eating something found in nature.
