High 5 Sports Bar

The High 5 Sports Bar is a high carbohydrate fruit and cereal energy bar, it's 92% fat free and made from GMO free fruit and grains to provide a balance of simple and complex carbohydrates for fast and sustained energy. The simple carbohydrate is processed more quickly through the digestive system whilst the complex carbohydrate then delivers a more progressive carbohydrate delivery. 

Sports bars also contain 18% to 20% fructose. Recent research at Birmingham University, Glasgow University, Herts University and others has established that moderate to high fructose levels can help to increase the rate of carbohydrate delivery to the muscles and as a result lead to improved performance.

SportsBar is a healthy snack with a balance of simple and complex carbohydrate from fruit and grains. It has a light chocolate or yoghurt coating and tastes great.  Its moist, easy to chew and does not become hard in the cold.

SportsBar can be used anywhere, whilst on training rides or trekking, during multi-day events, after running or as part of a carbo-loading program prior to a big race.

Runner's World

High5 sweeten their mixed oat and fruit bar with a generous yoghurt or chocolate topping and it’s tasty enough to bring out on a tea break without people thinking you’re a freak. The 20% chocolate top isn’t ideal from a pure performance slant, but sugar percentage is actually lower than High5’s Energy bar and the fat percentage higher. That correlates with the fact it doesn’t seem to spike your energy levels as noticeably if the easy eating gets the better of your “one bit at a time” intentions. It’s one of the higher calorie bars here which makes it better basic value, and great for long rides, but beware if you’re weight watching. It opens easily, works in a range of temperatures and has no nuts, artificial colours or sweeteners either.

Verdict - Limited flavours but very easy eating candy-coated chunk of mixed source energy. Performance 3/5, Value 4/5, Overall 4/5.

We were suspicious of this very sweet bar – too nice when eating sitting still to be palatable in the heat of training, we thought. We were wrong. It’s very chewy, so a bit hard to get down when you’ve been riding hard, and suffers in the heat of your back pocket, but we loved the hit of sweetness, which was a mood boost as much as anything. Quick carbs from glucose, caramel, sugar and honey got us going instantly but with oats, maltodextrin and rice you should also be kept going for a couple of hours after eating this.

Cycling Plus

High 5 Sports Bar Caramel - Second to the Powerbar Ride Bar in sweetness, but contains less fat and has a decent mix of carbs. Does melt on hot days though.

Bike Radar

This is a very popular bar, with a good caramel flavour and a thin chocolate coating. The packaging is tough enough for abuse but beware of keeping them in a hot car – that chocolate will melt and separate. Having said that, the High Five range does have other non-coated offerings, so if you are a fan then you just need to pick the product to suit your ride.
