Bike Radar

Known for their energy bars, gels and shots, Clif Bar have made their first foray into energy drinks with a new liquid version of their excellent Shot Bloks. The Shot Electrolyte drink is made from 91 percent organic ingredients (Clif say it's the first electrolyte drink to break the 90 percent mark) and is available in two flavours – Cranberry-Razz and Lemonade. It's designed to replace electrolytes and energy lost during heavy rides.

We use large, 750ml water bottles for riding, which means mixing four 20g scoops of the powder per drink. Each scoop contains 80kcal, which means a generous 320kcal per drink. We tested the Cranberry-Razz flavour which dissolves well and, with a little saltiness to counter the sweetness, is one of the most pleasant tasting energy drinks we've tested. It's easily ingested and gave us a boost every time we needed it.

Tri Radar

Everyday it seems another new sports drink arrives at the Triathlon Plus offices. This month’s pick of the bunch is Electrolyte Shot from Clif. Just mix a few scoops of powder into a bike bottle of water, give it a shake, and seconds later you have 40g of carbohydrate in an easy-to-absorb drink. The thing that differentiates it from its competitors is that it’s 92% organic, without as many artificial sweeteners as some other drinks. The organic ingredients also help to make it more palatable. It’s not as sweet as some we’ve tried, but it has a pleasant, natural taste. We used it on several long rides, swim sessions and a race, and it always quenched our thirst. Verdict A great-tasting and natural energy drink that gives you all the nutrition you need without all the additives.

... the first thing you notice on taking a swig is the taste. It really does taste of lemonade (that's *American* lemonade - what the Brits call 'homemade lemonade', to distinguish it from the clear fizzy stuff you get in bottle or use to make a shandy) and it's quite sour, but in a good way. This drink feels like it's cleansing your mouth out, and is a very refreshing alternative to the more sweet and sticky texture of some other energy drinks.

This is a pure carbohydrate product, and the main source ingredients are brown rice syrup and cane juice. As with most Clif products, the ingredients are mostly organic - 92% in this case. The mix also contains electrolytes, to replace the four key minerals of magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium that you lose through sweat, especially on hot days.

We've tested this drink on a couple of long sportives, and really like it. It seems to do the job just right: providing the carbs to keep you going ,and replacing the minerals to help avoid cramps, while the clean refreshing taste means keeping topped up is no chore.
