Nuun hydration tablets have been around for a few years (in fact, they're the original electrolyte-only tab) and recently some new flavours have been added to the range. Dropping a Nuun tab in a bottle of water creates a refreshing drink with added minerals to help keep you hydrated and avoid cramp when cycling.

First up, it's important to realise that Nuun tabs do not create an energy drink. There's no carbohydrate (ie, no source of energy), but that's the idea. Nuun was originally conceived to separate hydration from energy needs, and so the end result is a non-sticky non-sickly sugar-free liquid that really is nice to drink, even after (especially after) eight hours in the saddle on a long hot sportive or training ride.

The key ingredients of Nuun tabs include the minerals sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. These are the 'electrolytes' that help your muscles keep working. Similar rehydration products from other brands also contain these minerals/electrolytes but, according to the boffins at Nuun, the most important ingredient is sodium which most people need at a rate of around 700mg per litre of water. Each Nuun tab contains 360mg of sodium, specifically designed to go in a half-litre bottle – although the Nuun website confirms that you can alter this ratio to suit your own needs and preferences.

Do Nuun tabs work? In my experience, yes. I am prone to cramp, and having used Nuun tabs on a couple of long rides recently I can say the tabs seemed to keep them at bay. On a more prosaic level, I really enjoyed the taste of these drinks – which probably helped me drink more (which in itself helped reduce the chances of cramping up).

So what are the flavours? The new ones include strawberry lemonade, lemon tea and fruit punch – which seem to fit in with the friendly, informal, Innocent Fruit Juice / Dorset Cereals vibe that seems to be going on at Nuun HQ. These are added to existing flavours such as tri-berry, lemon and lime and kona cola (which has a dash of caffeine).

Testing the various varieties at the desk here in road.cc Towers, my initial impression was that the flavours were mild, verging on weak. But out on the bike, they're just right. Refreshing, not sweet, but not too tangy either. There was no sign of stomach ache, bloating or (possibly too much detail) farting – all effects that some cyclists report experiencing from similar products.

On price, a box of four tubes from the Nuun on-line store is £24 - although you can the same box for considerably less from other online stors; and you can buy single tubes containing 12 Nuun tabs for around £6 in your local bike or sports shop. It's hard to compare directly against similar products from other brands as the formulations vary, but on a crude milligrams-of-sodium-per-quid basis the Nuuns work out at 50p per tab containing 360mg of sodium. This compares against, for example, High5 Zeros (a tube of 20 tabs is about £7) which works out at 35p per tab of 250mg of sodium.

When we get down to this kind of level, though, it's not really about price. It's about if the drink works for you. Does it taste nice? Does it keep you hydrated and keeps cramps at bay, without causing any stomach ache? Do you still feel like drinking it after several hours of cycling? In my experience, the answer to all these questions is yes, so I'd recommend giving Nuun tabs a try to see if they work for you as well.

Bike Radar

2012 sees five new flavours of Nuun tablets: Strawberry Lemonade, Grape, Fruit Punch, Lemon Tea and Tropical, bringing the total range up to 11.

You drop one tablet into 500ml of water (although we usually use a 750ml bottle and prefer the more dilute taste) and wait a couple of minutes while it dissolves. They contain no sugar or carbohydrates, which means no extra calories – just electrolytes, vitamins and minerals to keep you hydrated and fend off cramp.

They can leave your mouth feeling slightly dry, but that keeps you drinking regularly and therefore more hydrated, so it kind of works out. A tube contains 12 tablets, stores easily in your backpack and is perfect for long rides.

When: To be taken all year round when exercising heavily. Why: Many people often take electrolyte tabs towards the end of a ride or just afterwards; however, that's often too late to tackle dehydration.

Each tab is packaged in a small, lightweight tube. Drop one into a 500ml bottle and sip through your ride. Unlike some electrolyte drinks, the cola flavour is very palatable and as a bonus it's also sugar-free which lowers the calorie intake.

Nuun Active Hydration tablets are a handy way of taking on board electrolytes on your ride without the extra calories found in most sports drinks and powders. Although that might sound a little counter-intuitive – you need calories on long rides – we've consumed far more bottles of Nuun than carbohydrate drink in training this year.

We've found Nuun best for the first part of a 4-5 hour ride, when breakfast is still settling and we're not quite ready to start on the sugary stuff. We tested Nuun in the UK winter (unfortunately it doesn't prevent bottle-freezing) and the much warmer Australian summer. We found it kicked our thirst mechanism into gear, meaning that we'd drink more on a long ride than if we'd just had water.

As a result we weren't as dehydrated at the end of the ride and could recover better for the next day. The tablets come in small plastic tubes (£5.99) containing 12 tablets each, which works out at 50p a shot. It's recommended you dissolve one per 500mL bottle (in 750mL is fine of course, just a little more dilute). The tubes are small so you can easily carry them to use for a mid-ride bottle refill.

They're available in five flavours: Tri-Berry, Orange Ginger, Lemon and Lime, Citrus Fruit and Kona Cola. Each has sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and B2 in various proportions, and the Kona Kola has 20mg of caffeine per tab. What's not to like? Nothing really, although they are a little pricey.

220 Triathlon

There's something really honest and reassuring about a company that focuses on doing one product very well. Nuun's portable, mess-free tabs - available in tubes of 12 and six flavours - each create an instant 500ml electrolyte drink. That means you can carry the equivalent of six litres of specialist hydration in your pocket. The result isn't to sweet or too strong and it's fizz free once diluted, making them extremely kind on your stomach. Their formulation works into your system faster than water alone, and the sodium content at 700mg per litre is bang on for anyone exercising beyond the hour mark, particularly in a warmer climate. They're not an energy drink, though, so be cautious of making this assumption. This is for good reason, given that carbohydrate can impede water absorption by the body as well as, in many cases, causing stomach discomfort.

Verdict - Fantastic portable, stomach-friendly and mess-free hydration - 91%

Half a Nuun electrolyte tab provides 180mg of sodium along with a smaller amount of potassium, magnesium and calcium. Perfect for providing optimal hydration while reducing your chances of suffering from cramp, these tabs are super convenient and could get you out of a tough spot in a hot sportive. Hitting the top end of the American College of Sports Medicine's recommendations for sodium per tab when mixed with a litre of water (700mg per litre) this natural formulation is great for heavy sweaters and those competing in long events in hot conditions.

Tri247

The fundamental philosophy behind the product is that all it does is to provide you with hydration and electrolytes, there's no carbohydrate in there at all (or at least none that's worth counting). This means that you can convert a bottle of water into a properly balanced electrolyte drink that your system absorbs really quickly without any bloating. You take care of the carbs by using gels, bars or whatever takes your fancy - there's no juggling between what you got in a drink and what you ate.

The tabs are small enough that you can slip a few in your pocket for a ride (wrap in foil or film as they just love water...) and it means you can mix up the flavours so you don't get bored - and the flavours are very light so you don't get a taste overload either.

We've been using the product for two seasons now and cannot think of a single bad thing to say about it (although for some the Cola flavour is a subject of some debate) - it really is worthy of a Tri247 "A list" award.
