Press Reviews

Cycling Plus

High 5 Isogel - Another of the new 'liquid gels' that can be taken without water. This one has added sea salt for that 'fresh from the ocean' taste. Verdict... Like a very thich drink. It's easy to get down and the taste is sweet without being too sickly. There's a slight sugary aftertaste.

Triathlete Europe

High 5 Isogel - British Energy company High 5 has introduced a range of isotonic gels that can be taken without the addition of water. What's good here is that the gel tastes very much like a sports drink in that it's not too strong or over powering and very easy to get down. We have tried them for a few weeks now with no problems and they've become a staple before longer outdoor swim sessions.

Each 60ml sachet, which is a little bigger than some, delivers 24 grams of carbohydrates to help keep you fuelled. The gel is very thin in terms of viscosity and easily swallowed which makes taking them on the move a doddle. For those wanting a kick as well as an energy boost there's also a caffeinated version in citrus plus flavour."

Men's Running

High 5 Energy Gel - Much like running long distances this energy gel requires one thing it would seem: practice. Knowing you are about to ingest sea-salt, for instance, is never going to be particularly easy on the mind, but the body appreciates the orange-flavoured, sugary content and will reward you by moving your legs faster, for longer. Placebo or not it seemed to do the job.

220 Triathlon

High 5 Energy Gel - This is a pleasantly simple, no-nonsense gel formula with a relatively average carbohydrate (23g) and sodium content (42mg). If you're new to gels this could be a good one to start with.

A 6% carbohydrate solution is generally deemed the optimal concentration for the contents to be absorbed into the stomach while limiting any gastro intestinal (GI) discomfort. When taken with 500ml of water this will bring the product to 4.4%, which is one of the lowest here and less risky on the stomach. This gel is free flowing, and provides and instantly noticeable zing, but after taking it with water this is hardly noticeable. Rating - 7

road.cc

High 5 Energy Source - Most energy products deliver the carbohydrate you need in the form of glucose alone (or with a dash of fructose), but your body can absorb only a limited amount of carbo this way - usually around 50g to 60g per hour, depending on your weight, age and other similar factors. High 5 say that fructose can deliver more carbohydrate to the muscles, in addition to that provided by the glucose. Put in the simplest layman’s terms, the fructose goes in another way, bypassing the mechanism that usually limits carbo intake to 50/60g per hour. The end result: you can increase your carbo intake by up to 50%, meaning up to 75g or even 90g per hour, according to High 5. And that means you can go faster, or further, or both.

A good-value and effective energy drink that could definitely help improve performance if used correctly as part of a broader training and nutrition programme.

High 5 4:1 Drink - A very handy and reasonably priced all-in-one energy product with carbo, protein and some vital minerals; ideal for longer races, sportives, and other endurance events.

Bike Radar

High 5 4:1 Drink - A 55g serving provides 39g of maltodextrin and 4.5g of fructose-based carbs to 11g of whey-based protein -so still gives a good level of carbs when compared to other energy products. The H.E.A.C (High Electrolyte Anti Cramp) formulation, which maximises fluid uptake and minimises cramp, really seems to work well and this is the first energy drink I've tried that hasn't induced stomach cramps.

The drink is easy to prepare, although it does have a tendency to separate when stationary for any length of time. This is nothing that a quick shake can't sort, otherwise the last few mouthfuls aren't the most enjoyable!

During high intensity exercise EnergySource 4:1 really comes into its own. The energy-giving effects are felt almost instantly, allowing you to work longer, harder and without the feeling of excess tiredness. It is also fresh tasting, encouraging frequent consumption and doesn't leave an unpleasant after-taste. Bike Radar Verdict - 4 Stars.
