Science In Sport GO + L-Carnitine Energy Gel 30 Pack

This product has been previously branded as the SIS Burner Gel.

Originally conceived as training development nutrition for Science In Sport's elite cyclists and teams the SIS GO + L-Carnitine Gel is based on Science In Sport's popular Go Isotonic Gel but with the addition of carnitine.

Each GO + L-Carnitine gel contains 1g of carnitine (roughly equivalent to the amount in 1kg of steak), and uses Go Gel technology in conjunction with an innovative nutrient environment (to aid 'signaling' and help optimise carnitine effect) along with potent anti-oxidants and a great lemon taste. Carnitine performs a number of important roles in the body. It is necessary for the movement of free fatty acids for fat burning in mitochondria, has a long history of use by endurance athletes and is an important nutrient, so much so that it is compulsory in infant formula.

The theory behind adding carnitine to an energy gel product is that by increasing the levels of carnitine stored in the muscles you could become more efficient at burning fat as a fuel and therefore helping to spare your carbohydrate stores. Your body can typically only store enough carbohydrate to fuel yourself for 1-2 hours of exercise and also has a limited capacity to digest additional carbohydrate intake. By increasing your ability to use fat as a fuel during exercise you should increase the length of time you can exercise before depleting your energy stores.

Recommended Usage

Consume upto 2 sachets per day, during exercise, ensure you keep hydrated. Children or pregnant women should consult their doctor before taking supplements.

Press Reviews

Cycling Plus

Designed as training development nutrition for elite cyclists and boasts 1g of carnitine, which is said to help burn fat. Verdict... Tastes very much like lemon, glycerine and honey cough medicine. Nice flavour.

Cycling Weekly

SIS developed the Burner Gel for pro riders trying to train hard and shift those last few pre-event pounds but, after trials, it was viewed as too good to keep as a secret pro only line.

As well as 19.3g of carbs, the Burner Gel contains one gram of carnitine, a compound that helps your body to utilise fat as a fuel during your riding. The idea behind the Burner Gel is therefore that it kick starts the oxidation of fat, enabling any ride to become a 'fat burning' ride - usually the preserve of long steady jaunts.

While it may sound like a magic wand for the more portly cyclist, there's a two-a-day limit as overuse can play havoc downstairs, and at £2 per shot, it's probably best saved for before a serious event.

220 Triathlon

During our annual visit to the London Marathon Expo, Science In Sport's Pete Slater (seen racing again at Ironman Lanzaroate in May) guided us through their new gel, the Burner.

The Blackburn-based sports nutrition outfit had hoped to keep the supplement a secret - until the gel was quite literally let out of the bag. One of roadcyclinguk.com's journalists picked up a dropped musette from an Astana rider at the recent Tour of Flanders and discovered the new gel.

It's USP, and where that 'Burner' moniker derives from, is the carnitine content. Muscle carnitine purports to boost fat metabolism - an appealing prospect to triathletes training/racing hours at a time.
